Animal & wildlife tattoos in Edinburgh

Fur, feathers and scales are texture problems before they are anything else. Making them read as real — soft where they should be soft, sharp where the light catches — is most of the work.

Texture is the whole job

An animal piece lives or dies on texture. Fur is not drawn hair by hair; it is built in layers of tone until its direction and softness read correctly from across a room. The same is true of feather barbs and of the wet highlight in an eye — a handful of very deliberate marks do more than a thousand careless ones.

Pets deserve the same standard as people

A pet portrait carries the same weight as a human one and comes with the same requirement: a good photograph. Eye level, natural light, sharp focus. If your dog will not hold still for it, several ordinary shots from the same angle are more useful to me than one blurry favourite.

Wildlife gives room to compose

Larger animals give more to work with. A wolf or a big cat can be built to wrap a forearm or fill a shoulder, using the shape of the body rather than fighting it. That planning happens at the consultation, on paper, before anything is permanent.

Good to know

Frequently asked

Can you tattoo my pet from a photo?
Yes, and most of these start that way. Photograph them at eye level in daylight, in focus, filling the frame. Send a few options rather than one — I will pick the one that gives the most usable detail.
Do realistic animal tattoos work small?
Only to a point. Realism needs room for tonal transitions, and below a certain size the detail closes up as the tattoo settles. At the consultation I will tell you the smallest size a given design can be tattooed at and still look right in ten years.
Where do these sit best on the body?
Forearms, upper arms, thighs and shoulders — flat or gently curved areas with room for the composition. Placement affects both how the piece reads and how it ages, so we decide it together rather than after the fact.
