Nature & landscape tattoos in Edinburgh
A landscape is about air as much as ground. The haze separating a near ridge from a far one is what turns a drawing into distance.
Depth comes from restraint
The instinct with scenery is to render everything. Distance works the other way: far elements lose contrast and detail, near ones keep both. Holding back on the background is what pushes it back, and it is the single thing that separates a landscape that feels like space from one that feels like wallpaper.
Places that mean something
Much of this work is somewhere specific — a hill someone grew up under, a coastline, a view from a window that no longer exists. Bring your own photographs where you can. A real place photographed in real light gives me far more to work with than a stock image of somewhere similar.
Shaped to the body it sits on
Landscapes suit long, continuous areas: the forearm, the outside of a calf, a shoulder running into the upper arm. We choose placement alongside the composition, because the direction the land runs should follow the limb rather than argue with it.
