Nature & landscape

Nature & landscape tattoos in Edinburgh

A landscape is about air as much as ground. The haze separating a near ridge from a far one is what turns a drawing into distance.

Depth comes from restraint

The instinct with scenery is to render everything. Distance works the other way: far elements lose contrast and detail, near ones keep both. Holding back on the background is what pushes it back, and it is the single thing that separates a landscape that feels like space from one that feels like wallpaper.

Places that mean something

Much of this work is somewhere specific — a hill someone grew up under, a coastline, a view from a window that no longer exists. Bring your own photographs where you can. A real place photographed in real light gives me far more to work with than a stock image of somewhere similar.

Shaped to the body it sits on

Landscapes suit long, continuous areas: the forearm, the outside of a calf, a shoulder running into the upper arm. We choose placement alongside the composition, because the direction the land runs should follow the limb rather than argue with it.

Good to know

Frequently asked

Can you tattoo a specific place from my own photo?
Yes, and I prefer it. Your own photographs carry the light and the angle you actually remember. Send several, including wider shots for context — I will work out which framing makes the strongest tattoo.
Do landscapes hold up as they age?
When they are built with deliberate contrast between foreground and distance, yes. Pieces that rely on very faint, uniform grey throughout are the ones that fade into mush. I build for the healed result, which is why the gallery includes settled work.
How large does a landscape need to be?
Bigger than most people expect. Atmospheric depth needs room for tonal separation, so a scene compressed into a small area loses the very thing that makes it read. I will give you a minimum size that keeps the piece honest.
