Shadow is a decision, not an absence
The temptation in dark work is to fill everything with black. Mood actually comes from what you withhold — a form half-lost in shadow reads as more unsettling than the same form fully described. Deciding where the light stops is the most important choice in the design.
Surreal work still obeys real rules
Merging a skull into smoke, or a face into architecture, only convinces if both halves are rendered as though they physically exist. The strangeness has to sit on top of correct anatomy and consistent lighting, otherwise it reads as a mistake rather than an intention.
An honest answer before we start
Not every dark concept survives contact with skin. Very fine, very dense detail packed into a small area will close up over years. If your idea needs more room than the placement allows, I will say so at the consultation and we will find a version that still lands.
